Cover Letter #1

Nicole Fernandez

In my personal narrative, it wasn’t easy to develop. Neither am I great with writing, but I did find some joy and meaning to this piece of writing. Having the readings for homework about language and the struggles that come with it helped as references to discover my own language in my writing. As I was trying to connect with my audience to relate and understand the struggles in having identity crises within their own language and culture. As a first generation, it is hard to find your cultural identity because most families come to have a better life and end up leaving behind who they are. While trying to write my narrative, it took me back to those exact moments which really helped me to develop my own writing and literacy. As for also hearing out other of my classmates struggles helps me with mine and not to be alone in this. I was able to help out others while reading their drafts and they were able to help me as well. This made the drafting process easier, I was able to develop more skills and re-read out louds and structure my narrative well.

I think this genre was a very good genre to write about because we get to understand one another and help each other develop better writing, drafting, and literary skills. Even though I enjoyed this piece, I realized that certain things I could have improved on for my next assignment and reflect on is that I should add relevant details, fixing up my writing with better grammar/language. Also being able to re-word things better, I think my structure was all over the place and I have better vocabulary. I could have also made it longer and include not only my struggles but also my cousins. In the next assignment, I think I would want to be able to take

time drafting more, and speaking with the professor or even a classmate for help. I think I should have also asked for help. I think having other people’s perspective and writing into mine can help me build more and better my own writing. But overall I don’t think I have done so badly for my first personal narrative.
